HC Deb 06 January 1916 vol 77 c1087
21. Mr. MACPHERSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the deadlock of traffic at Kyle of Lochalsh due to the fact that the Highland Railway Company refuses to give the same facilities as regards cheap through rates for goods to the Stornoway traders' steamer as it gives to Messrs. MacBrayne's steamer; and whether, in view of the fact that this restriction of traffic is injurious to the whole community of the Island of Lewis and more particularly to the merchants of Stornoway, he will take steps to see that the Highland Railway Company will give the same privileges to the one steamer as it gives to the other?

Mr. PRETYMAN

Inquiries are being made in regard to the matters raised in a communication on this subject which I have received from my hon. Friend. The complaint of undue preference made by the Stornoway Shipping Company, Limited, against the Highland Railway Company raises a legal question which can only be determined by a court of law, and it is understood that the shipping company contemplates legal proceedings.
