HC Deb 23 February 1916 vol 80 c670
7. Mr. KING

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether the steamship "Heliopolis" has ever been used for its intended or any other purpose since it was purchased by the Admiralty; and whether this steamer has now been disposed of?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I have already, in previous answers to my hon. Friend, explained very fully the circumstances in connection with this ship. As I have explained, she was purchased for the purpose of being converted into a hospital ship, and was allocated to Pembroke Dockyard. When War broke out it was necessary to take the men off her, precedence being given to urgent war work. She has not been used for any service since she was purchased, and the vessel is advertised for sale by public auction at the Baltic Exchange, on Wednesday, 1st March.

Mr. KING

May this be taken as an example of foresight or of economy, or of neither?
