HC Deb 23 February 1916 vol 80 cc676-7
16. Mr. SHIRLEY BENN

asked how many non-commissioned officers and how many private soldiers called up from the Reserve to the Colours since the commencement of the War have been discharged and gone back to private life; and if any and what bounties have been offered to them to induce them to remain with the Colours?

Mr. FORSTER

I am unable to give the numbers of those who came from the Reserve and have taken their discharge. By Army Order issued on the 20th instant a bounty of £15 will in future be paid to men who re-engage for the period of the War after completing thirteen years' service. The inducement, generally highly valued by Regular soldiers, of serving on for pension had already been offered.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Has the right hon. Gentleman considered the question of married men who have applied to continue their service if it is possible, and to be counted on the strength after the War is over?

Mr. FORSTER

I do not think any distinction is made between unmarried and married men.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Oh, yes, it is.
