HC Deb 23 February 1916 vol 80 cc677-8
47. Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Prime Minister whether he will grant a return of the number of clerks of military age still employed in Government offices, and of the number of those so employed who have enlisted and received the usual kit allowance but are still retained in their clerical work?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

I am compelled to refuse all such returns, in view of the heavy labour which they involve, and I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. and learned Member for Warwick and Leamington on the 14th October last.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

Having regard to the feeling which exists in the country, is it not desirable to issue an order to Government offices that they should do their utmost to let the men go?

The PRIME MINISTER

It has been done.
