HC Deb 23 February 1916 vol 80 cc690-1
46. Mr. ASHLEY

asked the Prime Minister why, in the case of seventeen British-born subjects, the right of trial has been withheld and the consideration of their cases handed over to a nominated advisory committee; why these men have been deprived of their liberty without any charge being made against them; and whether he will take immediate steps by legislation or otherwise to restore to His Majesty's subjects this safeguard against arbitrary acts of the Executive?

The PRIME MINISTER

I can add nothing to the answers I have already given on this subject. As I have said, I believe the legality of the Regulations under which these proceedings were taken is now the subject of appeal.

Mr. ASHLEY

Is not the advisory committee mentioned in the question nominated by the Government and removable by the Government, and is that a proper tribunal to advise?

The PRIME MINISTER

There are two judges of the High Court upon it.

Mr ASHLEY

Are they not removable by the Government?

The PRIME MINISTER

I must have notice of that.
