HC Deb 22 February 1916 vol 80 c575
19. Mr. KING

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether a scheme to adopt on a large scale the results of Professor Bottomley's investigations into bacterised peat has been adopted by the city of Manchester; whether this scheme has the approval of the Board of Agriculture; and whether the products will be available for agriculture generally or are only for local purposes?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD Of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Acland)

The Board are informed that the Corporation of Manchester intend to experiment in the manufacture of bacterised peat. They are satisfied that the experiments proposed are desirable. It is understood that in the first instance the material will be tested locally, and if the tests prove satisfactory arrangements will doubtless be made for placing the product on the market.

Mr. KING

I suppose that it will be open to other municipalities or private persons to take up the same system, and that there is no exclusive right given to Manchester?

Mr. ACLAND

It is entirely a matter between them and Professor Bottomley.
