HC Deb 21 February 1916 vol 80 cc430-1
51. Mr. BARNES

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty if the Admiralty is commandeering more Glasgow fish trawlers for the purposes of the War; is he aware that these trawlers are the only vessels which actually produce food for the nation; and, in view of the effect that will ensue if the production of such food is restricted, will he consider the advisability of taking some other kind of vessel not engaged on work of so important a character as fish trawling?

Dr. MACNAMARA

Not only trawlers, but vessels of all types available and suitable for mine-sweeping, are being taken up as required. The necessity is regretted, but I may say that Glasgow is not unfavourably treated as regards this matter by comparison with other fishing ports.
