HC Deb 21 February 1916 vol 80 cc425-6
53. Mr. PETO

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the increase in the imports of manufactured cocoa and chocolate for 1915 as compared with 1914, whether he can state what would have been the revenue from Customs had the duties, enforced prior to 1911, been collected on the 1915 imports; and how much of this would apply to imports from Switzerland only?

The CHANCELLOR of the EX-CHEQUER (Mr. McKenna)

If the duties in force before 1911 had been payable on the amounts of cocoa preparations actually retained for home consumption in 1915, the revenue would have been about £255,000, of which about £164,000 would have been received on imports from Switzerland. It cannot, however, be assumed that with the old duties the imports would have been as large.
