HC Deb 14 December 1916 vol 88 cc827-8
27. Sir J. LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland what steps must be taken by petrol users in Ireland in order to comply with the new Order placing the distribution of petrol under the control of the military authorities?

Mr. FORSTER

County and district inspectors, Royal Irish Constabulary, and superintendents, Dublin Metropolitan Police, are being authorised to issue permits for purchase of petrol to holders of licences under the Petrol Control Committee.

Sir J. LONSDALE

In order to make it quite clear to petrol users in Ireland, will the right hon. Gentleman say whether it is necessary in all cases to obtain permits from the constabulary before petrol can be purchased, notwithstanding the licences issued by the Petrol Committee?

Mr. FORSTER

I think that is so, but if my hon. Friend wishes I will make further inquiries.

Mr. ASHLEY

Could the hon. Gentleman say why there is this difference made between England and Ireland?

Mr. FORSTER

I think a moment's reflection will furnish my hon. Friend with the information which he asks from me.
