HC Deb 14 December 1916 vol 88 cc843-4
83. Mr. BROOKES

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can make any statement on the proposed in crease of railway fares; whether this will exceed the usual Parliamentary rate of 1d. a mile in any case; whether this will apply to all classes; and whether any difference will be made in the case of schoolboys and schoolgirls and others compelled to take journeys for reasons other than that of pleasure?

Mr. ROBERTS

Powers are being taken to increase the maximum railway fares at present chargeable, if necessary, but the point raised by the hon. Gentleman will be borne in mind.

Mr. G. LAMBERT

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when he proposes to make a statement as to whether or not there is to be any increase of fares?

Mr. ROBERTS

I think I shall have to confer with the President of the Board of Trade before making any statement.

Mr. KING

If advances in fares are introduced, will they be equal over all the country, or will they be local and vary for longer or shorter periods?
