HC Deb 08 August 1916 vol 85 cc866-7
64. Sir E. CORNWALL

asked how many persons placed in the internment camps in this country have been liberated during the last three months; and what is the number of enemy aliens now in this country not interned?

Mr. SAMUEL

The number of persons released from internment camps for alien enemy civilians during the months of May, June and July, was fifty-seven. Of this number twenty-one were persons who were found to be subjects of Allied or neutral States, and who were released as soon as their nationality was established. Twenty-four were Austrians or Hungarians, ten were Germans, one was a Turk, and one a Bulgarian. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer to the detailed figures I gave in answer to the hon. Member for the St. Augustine's Division on the 28th June, and in the course of the Debate on the Home Office Vote on the 29th June. There has been no substantial alteration since.

Mr. G. D. FABER

Were those Austrians and Germans of military age?

Mr. SAMUEL

I cannot say without notice, but they were very special cases.
