HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 cc281-2
6. Sir E. CORNWALL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can give the House any information as to the treatment of the ether officers and the crew of the steamship "Brussels"?

Lord R. CECIL

The United States Ambassador informed us on the 1st July that the officers and crew of the steamship "Brussels" were safe and well and were interned at Ruhleben. The five stewardesses were separated from the crew at Cologne. The United States Ambassador at Berlin was inquiring as to their whereabouts and urging their prompt repatriation in accordance with our request. It appears from a postcard received from one of the stewardesses, dated 4th July, that on that date they were interned at Holzminden. This information reached us on 20th July and we at once addressed to the German Government a strong protest against their detention.
