HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 c281
5. Sir E. CORNWALL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will state how many seamen belonging to the British mercantile marine have been captured by the Germans: and whether he has any information as to their present location, treatment, and condition?

Lord R. CECIL

About 1,500 British Merchant seamen are interned in Germany; their treatment does not differ from that of other civilian prisoners. The majority are at Ruhleben, but a small number are at Brandenburg, Hameln and Dulmen. The crew of the trawler "Horns," of Grimsby, are kept by themselves at Brandenburg. We have inquired as to the reason for this.
