HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 cc278-9
2. Mr. NIELD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government will take immediate steps to ascertain through the American Embassy who were the members of the pretended court-martial, alleged to have consisted of officers of the Marine Corps, sitting at Bruges, who confirmed the sentence of death and who were principally concerned in carrying out the murder of Captain Charles Fryatt, of the Great Eastern Railway Company's steamer "Brussels," with a view to the individual punishment of every person so concerned in this illegal and inhuman act?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Lord Robert Cecil)

We are asking the United States Ambassador to endeavour to ascertain the constitution of the court-martial which tried and sentenced Captain Fryatt. With regard to the point raised in the last sentence of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the statement made by the Prime Minister in the House on 31st July.
