Mr. MacCALLUM SCOTTasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many persons have been sentenced to death under martial law in Ceylon since the recent racial and religious riots, and in how many cases the sentence has been executed; and whether he can make any statement as to the present condition of the island?
§ The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Bonar Law)Eighty-three persons have been sentenced to death under martial law, and thirty-four executed, of whom twenty-six were convicted of murder. Martial law was withdrawn on the 30th August, and the condition of Ceylon is now normal.
