HC Deb 23 September 1915 vol 74 cc549-50
10 and 11. Sir A. MARKHAM

asked the Home Secretary (1) why official news circulated by the German Government relating to the War is censored; what are the reasons why the people of this country should have news concealed from them which is published in American and Continental journals; why a recent dispatch relating to His Majesty's Navy from the German Government to the American Government, since published in the American Press, has been censored; and (2) whether he is aware that, in order to obtain information relating to the War, people in this country are now buying daily copies of American papers; whether American papers are allowed to freely circulate in Germany; and why news published in American papers is censored in this country?

Sir J. SIMON

In answer to these questions, I would refer the hon. Baronet to the replies which I gave to his questions in the course of yesterday's Debate.

Sir A. MARKHAM

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the report in question appears in the "New York World" of 6th August? There is a report from the German Government circulated throughout neutral countries as to the misuse of the British flag.

Sir J. SIMON

I shall be very much obliged if my hon. Friend will show me that to which he refers, because those of whom I have inquired do not think the report is a dispatch at all.

Sir A. MARKHAM

A memorandum.
