HC Deb 23 September 1915 vol 74 c571
32. Sir EDWIN CORNWALL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the promise of the Government that economies would be rigidly enforced, what actual reductions have now been made, or are forthwith to be made in the expenditure of the various Government Departments?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. McKenna)

As my hon. Friend is aware, the Retrenchment Committee have published an Interim Report making certain recommendations which will, I trust, be carried into effect at an early date. The Committee are examining in detail the expenditure of each Department, with a view to the introduction of every possible economy, and propose in due course to issue a further Report.
