HC Deb 23 September 1915 vol 74 cc552-3
36. Sir THOMAS ESMONDE

asked what arrangements have been made for the attendance of Catholic chaplains in the military hospitals in Egypt?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Tennant)

There are now over sixty whole-time Roman Catholic chaplains in or on their way to the Eastern Mediterranean, but I cannot say how they are distributed between the base in Egypt and the fighting force in Gallipoli. So far as I am aware the number of these chaplains is sufficient to meet requirements, in any case the Army Council have sent, or are in process of sending, the full numbers which have been asked for by the local military authorities who alone know the requirements of the situation.
