HC Deb 22 September 1915 vol 74 cc452-3
51. Mr. SAMUEL ROBERTS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will consider the possibility of allowing a rather lower rate of postage than 1s. to the British Expeditionary Force for parcels below 3 lbs. weight or, if not, whether a lower rate will be arranged for parcels of not more than, say, 2 lbs. weight?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for West Devon on the 16th instant.

Mr. ROBERTS

May I ask whether the right hon. Gentleman will not consider my proposal that there should be a different scale for parcels below 2 lbs. Weight?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

As I pointed out in the answer to which I referred the hon. Gentleman, the question is not one of revenue but of transport. It is impossible for the military authorities, or indeed the Post Office, to cope with a larger dispatch of parcels than is now being dealt with, amounting at the present time to about 100,000 a day.
