HC Deb 22 September 1915 vol 74 c446
30. Sir J. D. REES

asked whether persons newly engaged at national shell factories are sent to the local Labour Exchanges for cards; and, if so, whether the object is to indicate that Labour Exchanges obtained employment for such persons?

Dr. ADDISON

If the question refers to the unemployment books of workmen engaged in occupations insured against unemployment under Part II. of the National Insurance Act it is, of course, necessary for workmen to obtain them from the Labour Exchange, but they are not sent to the Labour Exchanges for other purposes. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.

Mr. W. THORNE

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that men are now registered at Labour Exchanges who are fitted for munitions work, and no work can be found for them?

Dr. ADDISON

I must ask the hon. Member for details, as there is a great demand for these men.

Mr. THORNE

I can give one who has been registered thirteen weeks.

Dr. ADDISON

Perhaps the hon. Gentleman will send us the information?

Mr. THORNE

I will.
