HC Deb 22 September 1915 vol 74 c450
45. Sir J. LONSDALE

asked the Prime Minister if the Government have arrived at a definite conclusion as to the total number of the land forces which this country can place and maintain in the field; and if they are of opinion that the men required will be obtained without modification of the existing voluntary system of enlistment?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

I must refer the hon. Member to the statement which I made on the opening day of the Session.

Sir J. LONSDALE

Can the right hon. Gentleman indicate when we may expect a full statement of the Government's conclusions and intentions?

The PRIME MINISTER

I hope before long.

Mr. W. THORNE

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that if certain papers and individuals had been as indefatigable advocating voluntary efforts we should have been better off to-day for recruits?

The PRIME MINISTER

That is a matter of opinion.
