HC Deb 20 October 1915 vol 74 cc1799-800
82. Sir J. JARDINE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has received information from any manufacturers of straw hats that quantities of manufactured plait made in Germany are being imported from Switzerland in competition with British industry; and what action is being taken in the matter?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Captain Pretyman)

My hon. Friend has forwarded a. letter to my right hon. Friend in which this allegation is made, and if he is in a position to furnish definite evidence in support of it my right hon. Friend will be happy to have inquiries made. As he is doubtless aware, straw plait can be imported into this country from Switzerland only if accompanied by a certificate of non-enemy origin issued by a British Consul.
