HC Deb 20 October 1915 vol 74 c1786
43. Lieut.-Commander WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that all captains of fifteen years' standing in the British Army have been now promoted to the rank of major; and whether he will see that similar promotion is granted to captains of the same standing in the Indian Army?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the statement which I made regarding the British and Indian Army systems of promotion in a reply given to the hon. Member for Great Yarmouth on the 28th July last, of which I will send him a copy. I understand that the orders regarding the promotion of captains of fifteen years' standing in the British Army do not apply to all arms but to those only where the exigencies of the Service require that such promotion should be given. In the Indian Army no such exigency at present exists.
