HC Deb 12 October 1915 vol 74 c1186
29. Mr. FELL

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if his attention has been called to the anxiety felt and expressed in New Zealand at the active doings of a German firm from Hamburg which has established itself in the Tonga Islands and is seeking to extend German trade and influence by this means in the islands of the Pacific; and what steps the Government will take to put an end to this?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Steel-Maitland)

Rumours circulated in New Zealand in regard to trading with the enemy by persons in Tonga have been investigated by the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, who has informed the Governor of New Zealand that he is satisfied that these rumours are without foundation.
