HC Deb 17 May 1915 vol 71 c1987
20. Mr. HOUSTON

asked the Home Secretary whether he will give instructions to the police within the Metropolitan area to direct their attention to motorists and motor cyclists who drive recklessly round dangerous bends and blind corners and through crowed streets rather than to trapping them on straight, wide country roads where there is no danger to persons or property; and whether he will state what becomes of the money collected from motorists who may be fined for exceeding the speed limit on such roads?

Mr. McKENNA

It is incumbent on the police to deal with offences against the law wherever these may occur. They are fully aware of the dangers referred to in the question, and they endeavour to carry out their duties effectively and with fairness and moderation. The fines are allocated to the fund chargeable with the maintenance of the Courts of Summary Jurisdiction.

Mr. HOUSTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the police neglect these danger bends and blind corners?

Mr. McKENNA

I have done my best to recommend, and the Commissioner has recommended, that special attention should be given to dangerous places and that the police should not be over-active in securing places which are not in the least dangerous.

Mr. HOUSTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that the police are active where there is no danger and that they neglect those places where there is danger?

Mr. McKENNA

Is the hon. Member speaking of London or outside?

Mr. HOUSTON

I am speaking of the Metropolitan area.

Mr. McKENNA

I will do my best to bear in mind these cases.
