HC Deb 04 March 1915 vol 70 c948
10. Mr. BOOTH

asked the hon. Member for Saffron Walden, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, (1) how much commission has accrued to Mr. Montague Meyer up to the end of February; (2) whether the contract is still in force; (3) what is the rate of commission on present purchases; and (4) whether Mr. Meyer discloses to the Office of Works any dealings in timber which his firm take part in whilst he purchases on behalf of the Government?

Mr. BECK (Lord of the Treasury)

The answer to the first question is £9,561 8s. 6d. (£4,000 only has as yet been paid). As to the second and third questions, I shall make a statement later. The answer to the fourth question is that the representatives of the Office of Works at Mr. Meyer's office have complete access to all transactions in that office.

66. Mr. WILLIAM YOUNG

asked whether, in view of the admitted responsibility of the War Office in connection with the Meyer timber-buying arrangement entered into by the Office of Works, any steps have been taken by the War Office with a view to the immediate termination of the arrangement?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. H. Baker)

The War Office does not propose to terminate its arrangement with the Office of Works. As the hon. Member is aware, the Office of Works is considering the question of a new arrangement with Mr. Meyer.

Mr. W. YOUNG

How long are they going to consider it?
