HC Deb 28 June 1915 vol 72 cc1470-1
22. Mr. CHARLES DUNCAN

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Home Office has been asked to sanction an increase of pay to the Durham county police; if so, when the application was made; and whether it has been granted?

Sir J. SIMON

The Durham police authority on the 10th May submitted a proposal for raising the scale of annual pay of the county constabulary. In view of the uncertainty as to what will be the financial conditions at the close of the War, the Home Office advised that any increase of pay now made should be made by way of a special allowance for the duration of the War only, so that the local authorities might have an opportunity of considering the matter further on the termination of the War. This has been done in other counties, and I hope Durham will follow their example.
