HC Deb 23 June 1915 vol 72 cc1171-2
66. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will state the number of persons in Ireland banished from their homes and places of livelihood under the Defence of the Realm Act, as distinguished from persons prosecuted?

The CHIEF SECRETARY for IRELAND (Mr. Birrell)

Since the outbreak of War, thirteen persons in Ireland have been prohibited, by order of the competent military authority, in pursuance of Article No. 14 of the Defence of the Realm Regulations, from residing in, or entering into, the area specified in the order.

67. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will state the number of persons in Ireland dismissed from positions in the public service and caused to be dismissed by private employers, respectively, under the Defence of the Realm Act, as distinguished from persons prosecuted?

Mr. BIRRELL

I am not aware that any persons have been dismissed from the public service under the Defence of the Realm Acts, but I understand that the employment of eight persons has been terminated for conduct incompatible with the positions held by them and openly hostile to the Crown. I have no knowledge of any cases in which the Government have intervened to secure the dismissal of persons in private employment.
