HC Deb 10 June 1915 vol 72 cc346-7
57. Mr. MOLTENO

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the notice issued by the Board of Trade drawing attention to the importance of restricting the consumption of meat with a view to economising the national supplies and avoiding an excessive increase in price, he will consider the desirability of immediately taking steps to put an end to the wastage of meat and bread at all the military camps all over the country?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Tennant)

All possible steps have been taken already to prevent wastage of food at military camps and barracks. Instructors in catering have been appointed and schools for the training of cooks established in each command. From the 22nd of last month the scale of rations was modified in order to make further provision for varying the soldier's dietary. Under this arrangement the ration issuable in kind was reduced and cash allowance correspondingly increased—the bread ration being reduced by a ¼ lb. With this modified ration and generally improved messing system wastage of the soldier's food should in future be reduced to the minimum.
