HC Deb 20 July 1915 vol 73 c1313
8. Mr. WING

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he has any information that soldier comforts, in the form of knitted helmets, body bands, etc., contributed by the public have been sent in bales of rags from the front in France to Dewsbury for sale by auction to manufacturers of shoddy?

Mr. TENNANT

I understand that four bags of comforts in the form of mittens and body belts were, by inadvertence, shipped from Havre with a consignment of old clothing, which was sent to Dewsbury for sale by auction. The articles were in separate packages and not mixed with the old clothing. The packages were recovered from the sale room and taken into military charge, and steps have been taken to obviate a similar accident. I am satisfied that this is a case of mistake, and not a scandal, as has been incorrectly stated in the Press.
