HC Deb 05 July 1915 vol 73 cc7-8
5. Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether large quantities of Dutch nails have been shipped to this country from Holland during recent months; whether there are any wire-drawing works in Holland; whether the wire for the making of the nails comes from Germany; and, if so, whether this importation will be stopped?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I am having circulated with the Votes a statement showing the quantities of wire nails imported from the Netherlands in the first six months of the present year and of 1914. I am informed that there are three wire-drawing-works in the Netherlands, and that in present circumstances it is improbable that nails made from German wire are being exported from the Netherlands. So far as importations into this country are concerned, I would remind the hon. Member that all nails arriving here from the Netherlands must be accompanied by a certificate of origin issued by a British Consular officer.—[See Written Answers this date.]

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

Does the statement of origin merely refer to the manufactured nails or to the wire of which the nails are made? Does it extend to that?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Yes, it would extend to the wire of which the nails are made in this case.
