HC Deb 05 July 1915 vol 73 c7
4. Mr. KING

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state how many women have voluntarily registered themselves for work in connection with new conditions arising from the War; and for how many have positions been provided through the Board of Trade?

26. Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the President of the Local Government Board how many women have registered for war work in response to the appeal of the Board; and how many of these women have been provided with such employment?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Up to 25th June the total number of women who had placed their names on the War Service Register, exclusively of 2,70S who subsequently cancelled their applications, was 87,861, and of these 2,616 had been placed in employment from this register. I should also mention that during the period from the 13th March to 12th June, which corresponds approximately to the period during which the War Service Register has been open, the number of women placed from the ordinary register was 81,005. The number of women remaining oh the ordinary register on 25th June was 43,058. In this connection I would also refer the hon. Members to the replies on this subject given to the hon. Member for Edinburgh East on the 1st July, and to the hon. Member for North Salford on 10th June.

Sir W. BYLES

May we hope that they will be employed a little faster in future, as many of them are bitterly disappointed being invited to register and then getting nothing?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

We make the register as public as we can, and that must rest with the employers.
