HC Deb 05 July 1915 vol 73 cc31-2
58. Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that in several parts of the country, and in particular Wales, the Union of Democratic Control are, by their propaganda, doing much harm to recruiting; and whether he will call for a report on the matter from the chief recruiting officers, with a view to taking steps for their suppression?

Mr. TENNANT

There is no definite information in the possession of the War Office as to the propaganda of this body, but its operations and those of other organisations which have for their object the dissemination of anti-recruiting literature are being closely wratched by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr. PONSONBY

Is my right hon. Friend aware, that soldiers, including officers, are members of this union, and have expressed approval of its policy as the best interpretation of the objects for which we are fighting?

Mr. TENNANT

No, I was not aware of that, and I distinctly stated in the beginning of my answer that there is no definite information in our possession as to the propaganda of that body.

Sir LEO CHIOZZA MONEY

Is my right hon. Friend aware that a representative of this union came to my Constituency the other night—

Mr. SPEAKER

Order, order.
