HC Deb 05 July 1915 vol 73 cc32-3
59. Sir JOHN LONSDALE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War what is the number of mentions in dispatches that have appeared in the "London Gazette" in favour of officers, showing staff, not including general officers commanding, and regimental officers separately; also the number of casualties in each of these classes of officers; and approximately the proportion of each class now serving in the Expeditionary Forces?

Mr. TENNANT

I cannot give the information for which the hon. Member asks. The statistics are not available and, if it is necessary at all to take them out, the materials are for the most part accessible to the hon. Member and the public. I do not think it would be in the public interest to answer the last part of the question. On the general point raised by this question, I may refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for the Lichfield Division on the 25th February.

Colonel YATE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the honours which have been given have caused great dissatisfaction to regimental officers owing to the number of military crosses which have been given to men on the Staff who have never been within reach of the firing line?

Mr. TENNANT

I should be glad if the hon. and gallant Gentleman would give me notice. I imperfectly heard the question.
