HC Deb 05 July 1915 vol 73 c26
31. Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether any steps are being taken, and, if so, what steps, to check the accounts of contractors who have been entrusted with making the necessary alterations in vessels taken over for transport purposes from shipping companies and corporations?

Dr. MACNAMARA

All such work is carried out under the supervision of naval officers, with expert assistants, who exercise the necessary check on labour and materials employed. The detailed accounts are checked at contractors' works and at the Admiralty by qualified accountants attached to the Accountant-General's Department, who are members of the Society of Incorporated Accountants and Auditors, or of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and also at the Admiralty by the staff of the Transport Department.
