HC Deb 23 February 1915 vol 70 cc162-3
8. Mr. RUPERT GWYNNE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that since the outbreak of War all soldiers are exempt from toll in crossing Haslar Bridge, Gosport, whereas sailors are not exempt; and, seeing that many sailors are compelled to cross this bridge constantly to get to Haslar Creek, he will endeavour to obtain a similar concession for them?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

Under the Haslar Bridge Act sailors on duty equally with soldiers on duty are exempt from the payment of tolls. The Admiralty also pay a certain sum to exempt the garrison of Fort Blockhouse when off duty. I was not aware that soldiers when off duty had since the War enjoyed the privilege referred to by the hon. Member.
