HC Deb 23 February 1915 vol 70 c162
7. Mr. LEACH

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture, if his Department is taking such steps as will prevent a scarcity of bread-stuff for our people at the end of the present year; and, if so, can he briefly state to this House what such steps are?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Harry Verney)

The supply of sufficient bread-stuff for the population of the country depends largely on influences beyond the control of my Department. But the Board have issued advice on the subject to a great number of farmers, and as far as can be ascertained energetic efforts are being made, in spite of shortage of labour and unfavourable weather conditions, to increase the acreage under cereals this year.
