HC Deb 16 February 1915 vol 69 cc1010-1
6. Mr. BOLAND

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) what steps, if any, have been taken to increase the output of kelp, with a view to supply the deficiency in imports, for which the by-products of kelp provide an efficient substitute?

Mr. RUSSELL

The kelp industry is almost entirely confined to congested districts, but the Department are prepared to co-operate in any steps which may seem practicable for developing the industry, and, in response to applications received from time to time, have furnished all the information in their possession.

Mr. BOLAND

Is the right hon. Gentleman in a position to state as a matter of fact that kelp drying has increased during the last few months?

Mr. RUSSELL

I am afraid not.
