HC Deb 16 February 1915 vol 69 c1010
5. Mr. BOLAND

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) whether, in view of the success which has attended the institution of a crown brand for Irish herrings and of the experiments carried out on the West Coast of Ireland by the Congested Districts Board for the curing of mackerel, steps will be taken to institute a national brand for Irish-cured mackerel?

Mr. T. W. RUSSELL (Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture, Ireland)

The conditions under which the mackerel-curing trade is carried on are essentially different from those of herring-curing, and no inference, therefore, as to the success of a Government brand for mackerel can be drawn from the results of the Irish Crown brand for cured herrings. The Department have had the matter under consideration for some time past, and are prepared at any time to take such action as may seem likely to be useful.
