HC Deb 09 February 1915 vol 69 cc388-9
8. Mr. DUNCAN MILLAR

asked the Secretary for Scotland if he can state the number of districts in Scotland in which the Licensing Courts, under the powers conferred upon them by Section 35 of the Licensing (Scotland) Act, 1903, have defined special areas within which they have fixed nine o'clock as the hour of closing, giving the name of each district?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

I have no further information than is contained in the Licensed Premises (Scotland) Hours of Closing Return (No. 43 of 1912), to which I would beg to refer my hon. and learned Friend.

9. Mr. DUNCAN MILLAR

asked the Secretary for Scotland if he can state the number of districts in Scotland in which the provisions of the Intoxicating Liquor (Temporary Restriction) Act, 1914, have been put into operation up to the present date, and the hours during which licensed premises have been closed in each case under the powers conferred by Section 1 of the Act?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

I would refer my hon. and learned Friend to the answer given him on this subject on the 24th November. In addition to the cases of Greenock and Dundee, then mentioned, orders have been made applicable to the burghs of Gourock and Kirtintilloch and to the district of Tain, closing licensed premises at 9 p.m., and a further order applicable to the burgh of Lerwick has been approved for closing at 8 p.m., making six orders in all. As I mentioned in my previous reply, various voluntary arrangements for earlier closing have also been made.

44. Mr. DUNCAN MILLAR

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he can state the number of cases in which the competent military authorities under the Defence of the Realm Act and regulations have exercised their powers, under the Act and consolidated regulations, to close licensed premises or to fix the hours during which such premises shall remain open and to impose conditions under which the licence holder's business shall be carried on; and if he can give the names of the districts in which early closing is now being enforced by the military authorities and the hours of closing in each district, and the conditions imposed on licence holders?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Tennant)

The particulars asked for have not been collected, and I am afraid I cannot at present undertake to ask for returns from the military authorities.

Mr. MILLAR

Can the information be obtained and does the right hon. Gentleman think it desirable that this information should be obtained and made public?

Mr. TENNANT

Where the information can be obtained without trespassing unduly on our very busy officials I shall be glad to furnish the particulars, but I cannot undertake to put undue pressure on my Department.
