HC Deb 04 February 1915 vol 69 c117
4. Colonel YATE

asked for information regarding the condition of the British residents of Baghdad and the present state of affairs at that place?

The UNDER-SECRETARY Of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Charles Roberts)

The latest information received from Baghdad—which is, however, more than a month old—is that when news of the fall of Basra was received there all Europeans were sent to Kaisariyah in Syria. British Indian subjects remained, but under surveillance.

5. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary for Foreign Affairs whether he has received any official information showing that the Turks at Baghdad have plundered the Shiah Muhammadan shrine at Kerbela and have carried off property valued at two millions sterling?

Mr. C. ROBERTS

The General Officer Commanding Basra has heard a report to the effect mentioned by the hon. and gallant Member.
