HC Deb 21 December 1915 vol 77 c199
43. Mr. DORIS

asked the Chief Secretary whether and, if so, why twenty policemen have for weeks passed been placed on so-called protection duty in the demesne of the Marquess of Sligo, Westport, and if the expenses so incurred will be charged to local rates; has he received a copy of a resolution passed by the Westport Urban Council protesting against such a charge; has the police investigation into the report that a bomb was maliciously placed on a yacht belonging to Lord Sligo yet been concluded, and does it bear out the statement in the council's resolution that the explosive found on the yacht was taken from a store in Lord Sligo's demesne to which only his employés had access; can he state why Mr. Dudgeon, the constabulary district inspector, who had charge of the investigation, has been removed from Westport; and will he have a copy of the constabulary report on the subject furnished to the Westport Urban Council?

Mr. BIRRELL

Five constables have been placed on extra patrolling duty in connection with the Marquess of Sligo's estate. The expense so incurred is not charged to local rates. A resolution has been received in which the Westport Urban District Council state that they are advised that the bombs maliciously placed on Lord Sligo's yacht were manufactured in some of his concerns in West-port demesne. The investigation into this case has not, however, yet been completed, and it would be undesirable to give information with regard to it. A more experienced officer than the district inspector referred to in the hon. Member's question has, in the exercise of the Inspector-General's discretion, been placed in charge of this case.
