HC Deb 27 April 1915 vol 71 cc561-2
51. Mr. CATHCARTWASON

asked the President of the Board of Trade under what authority railway companies are permitted to retail spirituous drinks; and if there is any restriction as to hours and days?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. McKenna)

The President of the Board of Trade has asked me to reply to this question. The sale of intoxicating liquor on railway premises is governed by the ordinary licensing provisions contained in the Finance and Licensing Acts of 1910, subject to the exception that the provisions as to closing hours do not preclude the sale of liquor at any time at a railway station to persons arriving or departing by train.

Mr. C. WASON

May I ask whether the right hon. Gentleman is in a position to ensure that at all railway stations refreshment rooms where alcohol is sold tea and coffee shall be obtainable on reasonable terms?

Mr. McKENNA

I will inquire into the point. I am not quite sure as to what are the legal obligations on the companies.
