HC Deb 27 April 1915 vol 71 cc578-9
43. Mr. GOLDSTONE

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in making recent appointments to the inspectorial staff, there has been any differentiation of treatment in the matter of the maximum age between candidates who will inspect schools under the direction of the Welsh Department of the Board and those whose duties will be generally confined to the inspection of English schools; and, if so, what was the practice followed in making the selection of candidates for the two departments?

Mr. PEASE

The maximum age for the first appointments of assistant inspectors of elementary schools in England was forty-five. For the appointments made in 1914 and 1915 it was raised to fifty. The maximum age for the vacancies under the Welsh Department which have fallen in this year is forty-five. The method of selection has been identical, namely, a preliminary selection by a Selection Committee, who recommended candidates to me from whom I made a final selection.
