HC Deb 15 September 1914 vol 66 cc863-4
56. Mr. RONALD M'NEILL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that in some cases the wives of recruits are being informed that separation allowance only becomes payable when the recruit actually leaves for service abroad, and are being refused payment of separation allowance on this ground although their husbands have gone to training camps after giving up remunerative civil employment; whether the information is correct; and, if not, whether he will take steps to ensure that in all cases separation allowance is paid as from the date of enlistment?

Mr. H. BAKER

The information to which the hon. Member draws attention is quite untrue, and he will be doing a public service by contradicting it. The fullest information regarding the issue of separation allowance is being circulated to all local authorities and committees, and further means to the same end are being taken. Every practical step is also being taken to ensure immediate and regular payment.
