HC Deb 15 September 1914 vol 66 cc854-5
27. Mr. MURRAY MACDONALD

asked the President of the Local Government Board, as Chairman of the Government Committee for the Prevention and Relief of Distress due to the War, whether, in view of the arrangements set out on pages 3, 4, 7, and 42 of the White Paper [Cd. 7603] issued last week by his Department, all schemes for the employment of women devised by the Central Committee on Women's Employment will be considered by the Government Committee, and will require the approval of the Government Committee officially intimated before any money is expended in carrying out any such schemes whether from the Prince of Wales' Fund, or from local funds administered in co-operation with that fund, or from money collected by the Queen's Collecting Committee, or from money found by the Government; whether any such scheme has yet been approved by the Government Committee; and whether all such schemes so soon as approved by the Government Committee will be officially published without delay?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

All schemes devised by the Central Committee on Women's Employment must conform to principles approved by the Government Committee, and no money can be expended from any central fund on such schemes without the sanction of the Government Committee. Grants under the Unemployed Workmen Act are made by the Local Government Board in conformity with the policy of the Government Committee. The Government Committee have already approved schemes under which women will be employed in making articles for distribution in co-operation with local representative committees to persons who would not otherwise be able to obtain such articles. I will communicate with the Committee as to the publication of their schemes.
