The island has not been sold, but it was leased by the Crown in 1889 to a German company which sub-let the house and grounds to a German prince. Access to the island has been allowed under restrictions, and it is much visited by excursionists. The Government has asked the States of Guernsey to consider the steps to be taken to terminate the German company's lease.
