HC Deb 18 November 1914 vol 68 cc403-4
5. Mr. HOGGE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, if he can now say how many British subjects who were in Germany at the outbreak of hostilities have returned home?

Mr. ACLAND

The Foreign Office has record of about 2,000 British subjects who have returned from Germany since the beginning of the War. This is not exhaustive, as no doubt some persons have returned about whom no inquiries were made at the Foreign Office; and many persons on whose behalf the Foreign Office took considerable trouble have not notified the office on their safe return.

Mr. EUGENE WASON

Can the hon. Gentleman state the number who have returned from Austria?

Mr. ACLAND

I cannot for the moment. As far as my memory goes it is something like 1,200.
