HC Deb 17 November 1914 vol 68 cc331-2
25. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland why the soldiers who killed innocent people in Dublin last July, and the officers who are reported by the Commission of Inquiry to have illegally consented to the use of the soldiers on that occasion, and the person who illegally requisitioned the soldiers, have not yet been tried for their respective parts in that occurrence; when and where they, or any of them, are to be tried; if none of them are to be tried, will he say by whose direction and under what law this course is taken; and what action the Government propose to take with reference to the loss of human life on the occasion mentioned?

Mr. T. W. RUSSELL (Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture, Ireland)

In view of the open verdict returned by the Coroner's jury and of all the circumstances set forth in the Report of the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into them, it is not proposed to take any further action in the matter.

Mr. GINNELL

Even with regard to the deceased persons and their next-of-kin?

Mr. RUSSELL

If the hon. Gentleman refers to compensation, that question is now before the Treasury.
