HC Deb 13 May 1914 vol 62 cc1103-4
37. Mr. C. BATHURST

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state what will be the exact amount of the Exchequer Grant towards nursing in connection with national health insurance; what authority will have the administration of this Grant; and whether the county nursing associations will be utilised for the purposes of a national scheme of nursing?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

The Grant for nursing will this year amount to £50,000, and next year to £250,000. The details of the administration of this service are still under consideration, but I will certainly bear in mind the suggestion contained in the last part of the question.

Mr. C. BATHURST

Does the right hon. Gentleman propose to pay any part of this Grant to the approved societies so as to enable them to reduce the drain on their resources owing to prolonged illnesses?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

That is one of the matters which is under consideration at the present moment.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Will it have any effect on the Highlands and Islands Medical Fund, or does that still go on?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

It will go on certainly.

Mr. R. GWYNNE

Are we to contemplate those Grants being made without knowing properly what they are?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I do not know from what statement of mine the hon. Gentleman draws that conclusion.
